Short History
In 1937 the WOOTTON CREEK ASSOCIATION was formed at the request of the Board of Trade and with the consent of the King's Harbour Master, Portsmouth under the terms of the Dockyard Ports Regulation Act 1865, for controlling moorings, allotting berths and other matters incidental thereto in Wootton Creek. Houseboat moorings were excluded.
The Association was subject to the authority of the King's/Queen's Harbour Master, Portsmouth. It was of a voluntary character and was made to avoid congestion and confusion and for the general benefit of all persons using the Creek.
In 1969, at the request of the Crown Estate Commissioners, the Committee of the Association was reconstituted as a Fairway Committee, the Members of which would be elected annually by the Riparian Property, Houseboat and Mooring owners on the Creek and owners of small boats normally kept on the Creek, who collectively are known as the WOOTTON CREEK FAIRWAY ASSOCIATION.
The need for this change was to form a fully representative and statutory body with which the Crown Estate Commissioners were prepared to negotiate. This is in accordance with the Crown Estates Report for the year ending 31st March 1963.
